An autocatalytic set is a collection of entities, each of which can be created catalytically by other entities within the set, such that as a whole, the set is able to catalyze its own production. In this way the set as a whole is said to be autocatalytic.Autocatalytic sets were originally and most concretely defined in terms of molecular entities, but have more recently been metaphorically ...

An autocatalytic set is a collection of molecules and the chemical reactions between them, such that the set as a whole forms a functionally closed and self-sustaining system. In this article, I present an overview of recent work on the theory of autocatalytic sets and on how this theory can be used to study the probability of emergence, the ...

The emergence of an autocatalytic (super)set of autocatalytic (sub)sets. Keywords: Autocatalytic sets, Origin of life, Boundaries Report Introduction. The theory of autopoietic systems [1-3] and the chemoton model [4,5], both developed around the same time but independently, try to explain life as a functionally closed and self-sustaining chemical system.. In other words, autopoietic systems ...

An autocatalytic set is a self-sustaining chemical reaction network in which all the molecules mutually catalyze each other's formation from a basic food source. This notion is often seen as a "counterargument" against the dominant genetics-first view of the origin of life, focusing more on metabolism instead. ...

In chemistry, a chemical reaction is said to be autocatalytic if one of the reaction products is also a catalyst for the same reaction. [1] Many forms of autocatalysis are recognized. [2] [3]A set of chemical reactions can be said to be "collectively autocatalytic" if a number of those reactions produce, as reaction products, catalysts for enough of the other reactions that the entire set of ...
  8. Autocatalytic sets of molecules and chemical reactions. The framework was originally developed in the context of a chemical reaction system, which can be described formally as a set (collection) of molecules; possible chemical reac tions between these molecules; and, additionally, catalysts.A catalyst is a molecule that significantly increases the rate at which a chemical reaction happens ...

Informally, an autocatalytic set is a chemical reaction network in which the molecules mutually catalyze each other's formation, and which is self-sustaining given a basic food source. That such autocatalytic sets can indeed form spontaneously was already shown early on through computer simulations [8,9,10].

The idea of collectively autocatalytic sets has been introduced more or less independently several times[1-3], and was subsequently used in a number of origin of life models[4-7].Recent experimental advances in creating such sets in the laboratory[8-11] have generated a renewed interest in autocatalytic sets. Moreover, there is growing evidence that simple autocatalytic cycles may indeed ...

An autocatalytic set is something where the system is truly greater than the sum of its parts. Even if you put all the cellular components of bacteria in a solution, they will never spontaneously assemble to have the capabilities of a bacterial cell. However, when all the components work together as part of this complex network, a series of ...

  1. Autocatalytic set

An autocatalytic set is a collection of entities, each of which can be created catalytically by other entities within the set, such that as a whole, the set is able to catalyze its own production. In this way the set as a whole is said to be autocatalytic. Autocatalytic sets were originally and most concretely defined in terms of molecular entities, but have more recently been metaphorically extended to the study of systems in sociology, ecology, and economics. Autocatalytic sets also have the ability to replicate themselves if they are split apart into two physically separated spaces. Computer models illustrate that split autocatalytic sets will reproduce all of the reactions of the original set in each half, much like cellular mitosis. In effect, using the principles of autocatalysis, a small metabolism can replicate itself with very little high level organization. This property is why autocatalysis is a contender as the foundational mechanism for complex evolution. Wikipedia
